My Grandfather is a family man. He is honest. He is kind He is hardworking. He is a storyteller.
Born and raised in Namibia, he made a life through building roads alongside his father. Listening to his recounts I am always struck by the hardship they endured together, the desolation of their surroundings during those times - their tenacity inspires me to rise above the challenges.
My Grandfather carved out a life for his family with his hands; a man true to his title - provider.
The one thing that has kept him anchored and afloat in times of hardship was his steadfast relationship with God. When I look at his hands and the scars they bear I see the strength they possess; I hear the echoes of those laughs in his stories. Bringing together the strength of being capable and the laughs of life, I pray to see the gratitude of a humble man who has felt the triumph of achievement as well as the agony of defeat and is still alive to see his children and grandchildren grow up and prosper.
With this portrait of his hands, I aspire to portray the honest thankfulness that one can’t find the words to describe.
